Classifier

The purpose of desanding is to remove from the water heavy materials such as sand, gravel, mineral particles, and other organic items of more than 200 micra. The desanding process avoids the accumulation of sediments in channels and conduits, protects the pumps and other devices against abrasion, and avoids overloads in subsequent processing stages.

The QUILTON grit classifier is used to decant grit and heavy solids from the mixture of sand and water pumped out of desanders in water and wastewater treatment plants.

Features and structure

Operation

The QUILTON grit classifier is a device that decants grit and heavy sediments at the outlet of desanders in treatment plants.

The water/sand mixture is pumped into the QUILTON grit classifier. The inlet’s special design and the tank’s shape create a laminar flow that facilitates the decanting process. Solids are deposited on the bottom and the QUILTON conveyor gently lifts them, without disturbances, removes them from the water, and strains them before they are offloaded.

The upper part of the tank and the top of the screw are covered by lids.

The offload area is inspected via a quick-opening upper cover. The auger’s traction operation is located at the top to avoid problems of watertightness and seals.

There are several designs:

  • No central shaft and HB 400 protection.
  • No central shaft and Adiprene protection.
  • Central shaft and twin support.

The channel can be dismantled to facilitate maintenance tasks.

The QUILTON grit classifier is supplied with mounts and is easy to install on a flat surface. There is no danger of clogging by floating materials as they are easily removed. The water is removed via an overflow and flanged outlet.

Options in assembly and maintenance

ADVANTAGES OF THE GRIT CLASSIFIER

  • The spiral on the QUILTON grit classifier is shaftless and does not require any auxiliary centring system. Its only other component is its gear drive motor.

  • The conveyor’s operation is designed to avoid problems of watertightness and seals.

APPLICATIONS OF THE GRIT CLASSIFIER

  • Treatment of urban wastewaters.
  • Desalination.
  • Agricultural and agrofood industries.
  • Food production and packaging industries.
  • Chemical plants and paper and pulp factories.
  • Incineration plants: solid fuels.
  • Mining industry.
